Sunday 9th February saw the Chelmsford Cobras host Cardiff Comets at Riverside Ice and Leisure. Despite travel disruptions up and down the country due to Storm Ciara, the Comets made the 400 mile round trip to complete the fixture.

The previous meeting between the two teams had resulted in a 6-6 tie in Cardiff where the Comets fought back to level the game within the final few minutes. Therefore, the return fixture was hotly anticipated to be an exciting game.

The match started off at a high tempo with early shots on both keepers, at 2:40min, Cardiff player Olivia Taylor skated the puck end to end to find the back of the net. Cobras attempted to up the pressure to counteract the goal but were denied onto the scoresheet for the rest of the first period, despite several attempts.

However, 4 minutes into the second period the Cobras were rewarded with Brittany Stoneman hitting the net assisted by Jenny Bolton and Terezka Plankova.

Cardiff responded 2 minutes later, a goal again coming from Taylor, to take the score to Cobras 1 Cardiff 2. Halfway through the second period, the game had to be halted due to Cardiff's Netminder, Courtney Newitt, falling ill. Their back up Netminder, Mackenzie Whilding, then had to dress, so after a 10 minute interlude the match resumed. Cardiff's Taylor then scored for a third time to boost the Comet's morale. Whilding showed
no signs of needing to warm up as she stopped all 15 shots faced in the remaining minutes of the second period with the score line at 3-1 to the Comets.

The Cobras kept the pressure up in the final period pushing to get on the scoreboard. Following a quick turnover by Cardiff's Taylor she scored her fourth goal of the game, this meant the Cobras were now trailing 4 goals to 1. With nearly 11 minutes gone in the third period the Cobras finally found the back of the net with Plankova scoring her first of the game assisted by Hutcheon.
Cobras now had the momentum, and four minutes later Bolton scored for the Cobras, linking up with Plankova and Stoneman.

Following a quick line change, Lottie Ahmed then skated the puck half the length of the ice, splitting the Cardiff defence and tying the Cobras up 4 a piece with Cardiff.

A mere 30 seconds later, Plankova's line back on the ice, Cobras linked up again the take the lead 5-4 over Cardiff. Managing to score 4 goals in less than 5 minutes.

With 4 minutes 21 seconds left on the scoreboard the Cobras needed to grind it out for the remaining minutes to secure victory.

In the dying seconds of the game, with the Comets throwing everything at the Cobras, Steph Thon collected the puck deep within the Cobras half and pressed forward to the corner in the Comet's end. Holding onto possession as the clock ran down to zero and thus securing an outstanding comeback victory for the Cobras!

The match certainly lived up to the pre-match hype. And whilst not being the prettiest of matches to watch, certainly one to live long in the memory for both the Cobras players and fans alike!

Cobras' Netminder Cherry Hambelton made some crucial saves throughout the game facing a total of 19 shots.
The Chelmsford Cobras next game is Sunday 8th March home to Milton Keynes.
